Discis Celebrates 1 million discs sold

Education Value Behind Product Success

Toronto, Ontario (July 25,1994) -- Discis Knowledge Research Inc. today
announced that it has now surpassed the one million mark for sales of its
interactive books on CD-ROM.

A pioneer in interactive CD-ROM books, Discis' initial sales success came
in the education market, where its products are used extensively in the
classroom and have been "adopted" by a number of states as official text
books. More recently, a growing percentage of the company's business has
come from the home learning market where sales increased dramatically with
the company's release of its first Multiformat (IBM/Macintosh) versions of
the Kids Can Read series of children's literature in April of 1993. Titles
include classics like Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Petter Rabbit and
modern bestsellers, including several titles by Robert Munsch, recently
voted the New York Times Number One Children's bestselling author.

Since then Discis has also introduced Kids Basics, a series of titles for
early learning, and eight science and nature titles produced in
conjunction with the National Geographic Society. Discis has now expanded
its distribution through thousands of computer and consumer electronics
retailers, further fuelling growth.

According to Vice President of Marketing, Wayne Arcus, "CD-ROM is often
described as an 'explosive market.' The real challenge for publishers is
to create products that have the ability to withstand the heat this kind
of explosive growth generates. With a lot of 'one hit wonders' out there,
we're very proud of a track record that now includes more than 40 titles
produced and marketed successfully."

Arcus attributes the success of Discis Books to a product design that
blends the power of an entertaining story teller with that of a patient
reading tutor. "Children delight in the multimedia experience -- they can
hear the story narrated, follow along with highlighted text and enjoy the
added fun of music and sound effects," said Arcus. "At the same time, help
in building their reading skills is always available -- just by clicking
with the computer mouse."

The winner of numerous awards including the CD-ROM Professional's Consumer
Product of the Year and the Parents' Choice recognition, they have been
designed in cooperation with educators to support what researchers know
about how children learn to read.

Tip of the Iceberg

'We've compared our products to an iceberg in the sense that 90% of their
power is below the surface," Arcus said. "People notice what's immediately
evident on the computer screen -- the fact that we've chosen classic and
popular children's literature and enhanced it with highlighted text,
colorful illustrations, music and sound effects. These aspects of our
product play an important role in engaging and motivating young readers --
but they're only the beginning."

Arcus explained that Discis' supporting software is critical in helping the
child build reading skills -- which in turn build confidence and a love of
reading. An easy to use, child-centered interface allows the reader to
"point and click" with the computer mouse to obtain information about
words or objects in pictures. There is no need to use the keyboard. The
Discis learning software supports phonics and reading skills through the
availability of pronunciation, syllables, parts of speech, translation
languages and a recall list (for later word review). Arcus also noted that
comprehension -- the most fundamental of reading skills -- is aided
through incontext explanations and optional translation languages for
every word in the text.

"There are many entertaining 'talking storybooks' on the market," Arcus
added, "but I can honestly say that no other product is so completely
focused on helping children learn to read and fostering a lifelong love of
literature."
