What is Linux?

Linux is a complete Unix-like computer operating system that can run on the
average personal computer. Named "product of the week" by PC Week
(4/11/94), Linux currently works on IBM PC compatibles. Developed by a
worldwide community of software enthusiasts, Linux is already the most
stable, useful and rapidly progressing operating system available for the
PC platform today.

Begun by Linus Torvalds two years ago Linux has evolved into a
commercially-distributed operating system suitable for use on many
different levels. Since Linux has a broad range of personal and commercial
applications, expect an amazing growth in the number of Linux users.
Available for a fraction of the industry standard price for an operating
system, Linux will be the tool that many people choose in order to get
themselves connected to the Internet.

Linux plays an important role in the current computer industry trend
towards downsizing, because a single Linux system running on standard PC
hardware can act as a server for multiple systems as well as providing a
low-cost alternative to proprietary workstations running the popular Unix
operating systems. The print source for up-to-date information, Linux
Journal tracks the progress of Linux and brings new developments to
computer professionals and enthusiasts.

The Fine Print

Linux is an independent implementation of the POSIX operating system
specification (a public specification of much of the Unix operating
system). Although Linux will run on a 386SX system with 2MB of RAM and
40MB of disk storage, most American users have much larger systems. An
average system requires 8MB of RAM and 300-1000MB of disk storage along
with the usual array of peripheral equipment such as VGA monitors,
keyboards, floppy disks and interface boards. Extensions include the
Postgres database system and the MIT X-windows system. Packaged versions
of Linux are available on floppy disks, cartridge tape and CD-ROM and
range in price for $20 upward depending on what is included.
